Leinster schools cross country Santry 12th Feb

Nasty underfoot conditions were the dominant factor at the above event in Santry. First off for Celtic was Ella Mae Cromie who ran in the minor girls race. A combination of reduced training and missing out on the north Leinsters meant that she struggled a bit but still finished in the top 20. In the junior girls event we had athletes representing St Dominics College. The girls battled well through the mud and finished 5th team overall. Alison and Zoe were both suffering from heavy colds but along with Katie Hanna, Emily Corocran and Aoife Corr they gave it their best shot. Finn Burke Power ran well for the first lap but faded a little on the second in the junior boys race, Ben Quinn and Chris Clarke battled hard in the inter boys race. In the senior girls race Cliona Murphy led her team of Aoife Corr, Ellen Byrne and Laragh Hoey from St Dominics to third place overall and qualification for All Ireland schools in March. In the final race of the day Pierre had a great run in his first year as a senior when he finished 5th in a very high standard race. Well done to all.

Irish Universities Indoor championships Athlone indoor stadium

We don’t have full official results until tomorrow but Catherine Mc Manus had a great day at the above championships coming 2nd in the 60m flat and the 60m hurdles both in personal best times. She was also a member of the winning DCU relay team. Niamh Donnelly had a tough day running in the heats and final of the 800m running around 2mins 24 for both. Sinead Cronin had her first outing on the boards running 5mins 7 secs for the 1500m. Well done to all.

North Leinster schools

The North Leinster schools cross country were held in surprisingly nice conditions at the army barracks in Mullingar today. Club athletes were representing St Dominics College Cabra and supposed to be representing Mount Temple. In the junior girls event Alison Burke led her St Dominics team to 3rd place overall finishing in 9th place, Katie Hanna 12th, Zoe Couch 16th, Emily Corocran 25th and Abbey Corr 32nd. In the inter girls event Aoife Corr and Ellen Byrne were on the Dominics team which finished 4th just one point off qualifying for Leinsters. Hard luck girls. The star performer of the day was Cliona Murphy who looked very strong coming 2nd in the senior girls race and led her team to victory. Well done to all.
The only negative was the failure of Mount temple school to bring their athletes to the event which was such a pity because some more of our athletes would have surely qualified for the Leinsters.
