The Irish schools cross country championships were held on a very wet, bendy course in Jordanstown University grounds today. St Dominics minor team were on the road at 8am in a very positive mood! The race started at 12 sharp and as they headed out on the ‘big lap’ after doing the 500m small lap it was clear that the girls were packing well and looking good for a good team placing. As they approached the finish Sinead Reynolds who is in Cushintown AC led the team finishing a fine 6th overall, with Alison Burke and Zoe Couch running out of their skin finishing 16th and 24th. A great run by both girls especially Zoe who was battling sore knees for the past few weeks and had limited training done since the Leinsters. Rachel Greene, Abbey Corr and Lucy found the going tough but were great back-up for the team. There was great excitement at the presentation when they announced that St Dominics were overall winners of the minor race.
Cliona Murphy was next into action and she battled hard all the way and was doing great in the first half of the race but she tired over the last km and dropped back a few places but she gave everything she had on the day. Pierre was in a very tough inter boys race and was running a perfect race until he had a bad fall on one of the many bends on the course, lost 2 valuable places and couldn’t get back in touch. He still finished 5th in an extremely competitive race and secured his place on the Irish schools team for the schools international in Wales in two weeks time! Well done to all.
