Nationals 2018 update

The ‘Nationals’ got off to a great start on Saturday with Catherine qualifying for the 400m hurdles final in a new pb and later in the day winning a surprise bronze medal in the 200m final. Pierre, Niamh and Cliona all making it through to their finals on Sunday. Daire, Susie and Aoife were unlucky to miss out on final places in their 800m heats.

On Sunday Emily Corcoran came 3rd in the high jump, Catheine won her first National outdoor senior title in the 400m hurdles in her 4th ever race over the distance in another pb. Great run and a great way to celebrate her 20th year as a competitive athlete having started in Celtic as a six year old!!

Pierre had a sore heel after his heat of the 5k and was advised not to risk another race this weekend so reluctantly pulled out of the 5k final, Niamh Donnelly ran close to her pb in her heat on Saturday and really felt the effort in her legs in the final on Sunday. Cliona Murphy had a great run with new pb in the 1500m final.

The last event of the day was the 4x400m relay in which we were defending champions. Susie ran a solid first leg handing over to Cliona who had just 20mins earlier raced her 1500m yet did enough to keep us in the race, handing over to Alison who kept us in touch enough to leave Catherine the job of bringing the baton home to retain the title for another year. Great running girls and especially Cliona who was drafted in at the last minute.

Well done all!
A big thank you to all our young athletes who did ‘basket duty’ over the two days in Santry. You were a credit to the club and well done to you and your parents on your support to our seniors.
