Indoor Intervarsities 2016

A number of our athletes were back in action in Athlone this weekend competing in the Irish Intervarsity Championships.

Pierre (DCU) was first on track showing immense class as he cruised to victory in the mens 3000m. We also had Cliona (TCD) & Claire (DCU) in action in the womens 1500m both recording strong runs in 4:49.10 and 4:49.80 respectively. Despite having a hectic week and battling a head cold, Catherine (DCU) showed some real competitive spirit running the 200m heat, followed 20mins later by the 60m hurdles, then the 200m final and finished it all off running in the 4x200m relay for DCU.

Well done everyone! You can watch the action all again on YouTube below. (You may need to rewind to the start!)

AAI Games Athlone

Catherine Mcmanus and Pierre Murchan both competed in the AAI games today in Athlone. Catherine had an iffy hamstring after the joys of the league final yesterday so decided not to do the hurdles but she ran a personal best in the 200m. Pierre was in with the big boys today in a crowded field and despite getting bumped around a bit managed to knock 3 seconds of his personal best time for 1500m running 3mins 54.88 secs. With Finn and Caoimhe getting pbs yesterday in their 400m races and the women’s team bronze this has been a great weekend for the club. Well done everyone 😊

Brilliant Bronze at the National Indoor League Final

DSC02355.JPG

Our senior womens DCH team battled hard to secure a fantastic third place at the National Indoor League Final today in Athlone (6th of Feb).

First up was our Jack of all trades Catherine in the shot putt, directly followed by the 60mh which she won comfortably. Next up were Claire and Cliona in the 1500m who both had fantastic runs – Claire fighting right to the end to secure the third spot and Cliona knocking 10 seconds off the time she ran last weekend!

Meanwhile our Leaving Certers Aoife Corr & Muireann put the thoughts of the mocks aside for a few hours to focus on something much more important – scoring us points in the pole vault and high jump! (Also, shout out to Muireann who wasn’t feeling great but still put up a great fight in the vault!)

Catherine was then back in action in the 60m followed by Caoimhe who ran a fantastic PB in the 400m against some top national competition. Niamh was next up battling it out in the 800m where she secured second place while Alison leaped her way into third place in the long jump and then went on to blast around the 200m – no bother to her!

Aoife Ni Bhroin was our last field eventer of the day who improved on her triple jump PB from the last league event to help us claw up the rankings before the final event – the 4x200m relay!

Our relay team had put in a truly immense amount of baton and changeover training in the 4-5 minutes leading up to the race so needless to say, they were extremely confident toeing the line and not a bit nervous! (Ha!)

Alison lead the team off in the first leg and in the process probably ran the fastest 200m of her life to date in order to get the baton to Catherine who was waiting on the second leg. Catherine ran a much more sensible 200m than she did last week and did not end up with her face in the bin this time – excellent progress. Herself and Niamh, our two oldest and most experienced runners on the team, decided to have a toss around with the baton during the changeover, you know, for the craic. Regardless however, Niamh still managed to look like a pretty impressive sprinter and certainly put the frightners on a few of the opposing teams when she wouldn’t let them get away without a fight! We then had our 400m aficionado Caoimhe on the anchor leg who powered the team home in 3rd position.

Once all the points were tallied the girls were delighted to find out they had placed third in their first National League Final – a great result for such a young team in their first year!

We must commend all the girls who came out each weekend to battle it out against the other clubs – if there was a medal for teamwork and team spirit, we would definitely have got the gold! Big thanks on behalf of the all gals to all the coaches and supporters who cheered the team along the whole way in Athlone and from afar!

PS Congrats to Finn (400m) and Evan (800m) who both had great runs in the guest races too!

Till the next league….Hon DCH!!
