Well done to Finn Burke Power on his 2nd place in the under 14 race at the CBS races in ALSAA on Wednesday. Luke Hanway finished 7th and both lads helped the St Declans team to 2nd team overall. Well done lads. Conall ran in the junior race, Eoin and Michael in the inter and Danny in the senior. There was no team from the school in these events.

Nationals in Rathoath

We had a great day at the first weekend of the Nationals in Ratoath. Our under 12 girls team were first into action and what a sight with over 170 girls heading out to run through a sea of mud! All our girls were new to National competition and found the going very tough. Ella Mae was our first finisher in 36th position and she was a scoring member of the Dublin team which won the inter county and finished 3rd in the inter region competitions. Billy was our sole competitor in the boys race and like the girls he found the move up to National fairly daunting but he battled well and made the scoring team for Dublin in the inter county coming 3rd team.

Our under 14 boys did their best but were outclassed on the day. Our under 16 girls had a poor run by their standards with only Aoife Corr running to form, Ellen had been unwell coming in to the event and did well to finish. Alison, Maia and Caoimhe will have better days.

Our star of the day was Pierre who won the under 16 boys in impressive style. Pierre had a tough battle with last years winner and pulled away over the last 800m to a well deserved win. This win was a result of consistant solid training, no Saturdays or Sundays lying in the bed, just getting out and doing the work. Well done !

By the time the under 18 /Junior girls set off there was no grass to be seen, just churned up mud. It was great to see Clare Brennan back racing after a long battle with breathing problems, also Heather getting back into shape and both girls scored on the Dublin team which won the inter county. Cliona Murphy had a great run in the under 18 girls making the Dublin team which won the inter county and region. Cliona Carthy was unfortunate to get a bad fall early in the race and never really recovered and Eva ran strongly all the way.

Thank you to all the parents who supported the children, without you they wouldnt be there. The younger children will have gained great experience from the event and were delighted to see Pierre racing. The Mammies and Daddies now know what ‘Nationals’ are about.

The person who invented washing machines deserves a medal.

Dublin uneven age cross country championships

First off today were the under 9 girls and our little girls did us all proud by taking 3rd team. Great running by Keelin Gogarty in 2nd place, followed closely by Alex, Clare, Julieanne and Aimee. our under 11 girls were next off and our team finished in 2nd place with Clare Murphy leading the way, followed by fine runs form Anna, Ada, Alice, Sophie, Gillian and Laura May. Caoimhe was doing very well but had to drop out due to a stitch. Better luck next time Caoimhe. In the boys under 11 Jaeden and Conor were very impressive, tom and Finn found the going tough.

In the girls under 13 and Boys under 13 we had some athletes who didn’t turn up for the races and our teams were a little thin as a result. Alison had a great run in the girls race with Katie, Emily and Dora all having fine runs as well but weren’t strong enough to qualify for the Nationals. Billy had a great run in the under 13 boys race but the team was missing vital people and despite the best efforts of Evan, Ben and Oliver the failed to qualify for Nationals. in the under 15 boys race all the lads acquitted themselves well but as most were running up an age group getting through to National was never going to be easy. in the girls under 15 race Aoife Corr had a great race to finish 9th, Ellen wasnt well over the last 2 weeks and found the going tough and Ciara did very well to finish a very tough course.
The girls under 17 finished 2nd team with Cliona Carthy, Alison Armstrong, Cliona Murphy, Caoimhe and Maia all running well.

For the second week in a row Pierre Murchan was our outstanding athlete when he powered his way to win the under 17 championship beating the under 18 champion on the way! This was a fine performance and should give Pierre confidence as he tackles the National under 16 race in 2 weeks time. In the girls under 19 race Heather and Eva finished in the top 12. Unfortunately Olwyn hurt her leg and had to drop out.

Well done to all who came out to represent the club over the two weekends, thank you to the parents who brought you all and who helped out as well. It’s disappointing for the teams who didn’t make the Nationals due to the non-appearance of some athletes, especially if they had turned up qualification would have been certainly possible. We train the athletes, mind them on the dark nights etc and the least we expect is that they represent the club and support their fellow athletes by competing in the championships.
